In 2008, Dash Navigation launched and sold a portable GPS device that connected wirelessly to the Internet to provide a completely new, interactive experience. Unlike car GPS units at the time, Dash Navigation updates and extra features came via web connection in real time - including locations and pricing for gas; or locations, movies playing and pricing for cinemas. The device was connected through a cellular data network and WiFi connectivity. The Dash device also collected data about traffic conditions from all other Dash drivers, and provided estimates for how long alternative routes would take on any given day. BlackBerry/RIM acquired Dash in June, 2009.
